Travelling from one of the richest towns in England to a community that six years ago was one of the most materially poor communities in the world the team was apprehensive and nervous.
What they found after travelling for 29 hours was 900 children who were happy and smiling from dawn to dusk, a community that were so welcoming and hospitable that the basic accommodation felt like a four star hotel.
The Team learnt how over a six year period a small local team from “Food for the Hungry Uganda” had worked and prayed with the community to help them totally transform the desperately impoverished conditions and the spiritual lies that they had been conditioned to believe into a vibrant village that was now able to share the very basic necessities of life and to combat the lies of the witch doctors.
The Synergy Team lead by the Beaconsfield Church Youth Worker, Rob Hayden, organised and ran a Bible Camp similar to the holiday clubs run in the Churches in Beaconsfield and helped the community build a nursery room close to their Church. Seeing the faces of 600, six to seventeen year olds respond and actively engage with all the simple things that we enjoy in the UK were experiences that none will forget.
During one afternoon the team were invited in groups of five to visit people’s homes. The simplicity and austerity of these homes is difficult to comprehend unless you see it with your own eyes however the joy and welcoming was also equally incomprehensible. One lady told the story of how her husband and daughter were killed in a car accident 10 years ago; they were buried in graves next to her house with two beautiful grave stones. She was bringing up her other eight children on her own from a simple garden and a few animals. When the lady prayed it was for thankfulness for all that she had been given and for her visitors. As these five visitors were saying their farewells the lady disappeared into one of her small out buildings and appeared with five golden brown eggs, which she placed in a small bag and gave to them.
As these five prepare for Christmas this year, the memory of the woman who gave those five eggs with so much humility and accepted the two grave stones with so much grace will put a new perspective on giving and receiving, that will be a life changing experience.
The 15 went out to give and make a difference, they achieved this but also came back receiving more than they could have imagined.
